Technical leader of the four person Network Support group.

LAN support included 600+ end-users with 30+ servers. The majority of the servers were IntraNetWare 4.11 with two HP Unix servers and two NT servers. Multiple Oracle NetWare servers supported mission critical client/server applications. A small Intranet was operational on two web servers, NetWare and NT 4.0. Both IPX and TCP/IP were supported with plans to migrate to pure IP network in 1999.

Responsibilities of the Network Support group were:

    • All servers, hardware and software
    • Installation and maintenance of GroupWise 5.2 email system
    • Installation and setup of network and server monitoring system
    • All WAN hardware, software and communication links, primarily Frame Relay
    • LAN hardware, software and design
    • Internet connectivity and Intranet hardware and software
Markel was evaluating a move to Gigabit Ethernet and Layer 3 switching for greater flexibility and to increase bandwidth when I left.

Major Accomplishments:

    • Upgrade of GroupWise from version 4.1a to version 5.2.
    • Implemented server management through Novell ManageWise 2.0.
    • Planned and implemented the conversion from 100mbps routed TCNS to a 100mbps100Base-T switched environment..
    • Planned and implemented move of 40+ person department to a new building, including setting up complete networking infrastructure with no disruption of services.
