Shared responsibility for the support and implementation of all aspects of information technologies as part of the integration of the Information Center into the Information Systems Department (IS). Planned, coordinated, implemented and monitored campus LAN. The other supervisor and I had responsibility for 7 support technicians.

Markel moved from a file and print server mode to a full scale mission critical client/server model. Using Oracle and SQLBase data base servers and SqlWindows GUI applications, the network supports the full range of business needs.

Technologies supported:

    • PC workstations, 486 or Pentium based, running Windows & Windows for Workgroups
    • Novell NetWare 3.1x and 4.1 on servers ranging from 486/66mhz to Pentium 133mhz.
    • Ethernet 10Base-T to the workstations with a 100mbps fiber backbone based on TCNS
    • Wide Area Network(WAN) connections to Evanston IL, Pewaukee WI and Lexington KY using both dedicated 56kpbs lines and Frame Relay
    • Novell GroupWise, Lotus Notes, WordPerfect for Windows 6.1, Excel 5, Word 6
Major Accomplishments:
    • Planned, implemented and managed growth of LAN environment from 1 server and 20 workstations (1989) to 24 servers and 500+ workstations (1994).
    • Planned, implemented and managed LAN and database portion of Markel's conversion to a LAN based Client/Server environment.
    • Acted as DBA to Implement the initial database environment using both Gupta's SqlBase and Oracle 7.x. Maintained this role until formal DBA position was filled.
